OcuSciences, Inc., is a product-stage medical diagnostic device company commercializing a rapid, unique and patented non-invasive ocular imaging technique. The technique, termed Retinal Metabolic Analysis (RMA™), enables detection of retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, years earlier than current clinical methods and before irreversible cell death becomes visible. In addition, RMA™ can be used as a monitoring tool to detect disease progression or mitigation with treatment.
Currently, OcuSciences has a clinical ready retinal imager, the OcuMet Beacon™, that can provide a high quality fundus, back of the eye, photograph and using the RMA™ technology, provide a metabolic signature of the health of retinal cells. The device is easy to use and provides quantitative results that are easily interpreted by primary eye care providers such as optometrists or ophthalmologists. These providers could use the OcuMet Beacon™ to detect and monitor diabetic eye disease and other ocular diseases earlier.
The effects of diabetes and the progression of the disease to cause retinal cell damage leading to diabetic retinopathy is the first disease the company will address. At the earliest stages of diabetic eye disease, before clinically visible complications are present, there is increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction present in the retinal cells. We have shown that RMA™ detects mitochondrial dysfunction in a number of retinal diseases, including in diabetics with and without retinopathy, with the latter having even more mitochondrial dysfunction. Thus, RMA™ provides the first non-invasive, rapid, easy-to-use, and affordable tool to detect early retinal disease, including the earliest retinal complications of diabetes.
